Jewel is a popular black raspberry cultivar developed through Cornell University’s Small Fruit Breeding Program in Geneva, New York. It is a summer-bearing black raspberry, producing its main crop on floricanes rather than on first-year primocanes.
Jewel is particularly valued for its large, dark black fruit and rich raspberry flavor. The berries are well suited to eating fresh and can also be used for jams, jellies, preserves, baking and freezing.
As a black raspberry, Jewel has a different growth habit from the red and yellow raspberries in this collection. The plants produce new canes during the growing season, with those canes becoming the fruiting floricanes the following year. Removing spent fruiting canes after harvest helps maintain an organized planting and gives the new canes room to develop.
Jewel performs best in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Like other raspberries, it does not perform well in persistently wet or poorly drained ground. Good air circulation is also useful for reducing disease pressure and keeping the foliage dry.
The variety is particularly well suited to home gardens where gardeners want the distinctive flavor and color of black raspberries.
