Cabrillo

Strawberries

Cabrillo was released by the University of California breeding program in 2015. This day-neutral variety has large, flavorful fruit and is high yielding compared to other day-neutral varieties we offer. As a day-neutral it can be planted any time of the year, and will flower and fruit regardless of day length. The variety is moderately resistant to powdery mildew and Verticillium, is somewhat tolerant to Phytophthora but is susceptible to Colletotrichum, Fusarium and Macrophomina.

Royalty Fees: Strawberry breeding programs are funded by charging royalty fees upon the varieties that they produce. Royalty Fee for Cabrillo: $8 per 1,000 plants, included in the cost below.

Sweetness that doesn't quit in July

Why growers keep coming back

Most strawberries give you three good weeks. ION gives you a season. Released by the University of California breeding program, it’s a true day-neutral — it sets fruit on day length-independent cycles, so a spring planting keeps producing large, deep-red, high-sugar berries from early summer until frost shuts it down.

The fruit is what made ION famous: long conical berries, firm enough to hold in the fridge for a week, sweet enough that farmers-market growers price them above their other varieties. It’s also the variety the greenhouse and hydroponic industry standardized on — if you’ve eaten a premium winter strawberry, there’s a good chance it was an ION.

Ours are different in one way that matters: every crown is certified organic. Grown near Mt. Shasta in soil disinfested with steam and biology instead of chloropicrin, dug dormant, cold-stored, and shipped at your planting window.

Trim expectations, not blossoms-forever: pinch the first flush of flowers after planting and ION repays you with bigger plants and heavier picking from midsummer on. Growing guides
