UC Eclipse is a newer photoperiod-insensitive strawberry released by the University of California, Davis in 2023. It is often described as a “summer plant” cultivar because it was specifically developed for summer-plant production systems. Its flowering is not dependent on traditional short-day conditions, allowing it to continue flowering across a broad range of day lengths.
Eclipse is particularly notable for its combination of large fruit, firmness, long shelf life and high marketable yields. In UC Davis trials, cumulative marketable yields were substantially higher than Portola, UCD Finn and UCD Mojo, while the fruit maintained strong size and firmness through the production season.
Disease resistance is one of the major reasons Eclipse was developed. It carries resistance to Fusarium wilt race 1 and has moderate resistance to Verticillium wilt and Phytophthora crown rot. It is moderately susceptible to charcoal rot, so good drainage and careful site management remain important.
For gardeners, Eclipse is particularly interesting when large, firm berries and a long production window are more important than a single concentrated harvest. It can also be useful where Fusarium wilt is a concern.

Eclipse produces large, firm strawberries with good shelf life. The fruit is attractive and well suited to fresh eating.
Eclipse has strong resistance to Fusarium wilt and moderate resistance to several other important strawberry diseases, including Verticillium wilt and Phytophthora crown rot.
Yes. Eclipse is well suited to home gardens as well as larger growing operations. Its day-neutral habit makes it a good choice for gardeners who want strawberries over an extended season.

These strawberry plants arrived with roots fully intact and no signs of stress. Best organic starts I have found in the US.

Sorry, no reviews match your current selections
We dig, grade, cold-store, and pack every crown and cane ourselves. If a plant arrives in bad shape, isn’t what you ordered, or fails to break dormancy despite proper planting, we’ll replace it or credit you — no fine-print gymnastics.
One honest note before the details: dormant plants are supposed to look dead. Brown tops, no leaves, wiry roots — that’s a healthy crown in storage mode, not a problem. Most “my plants arrived dead” worries end the moment they’re planted and watered.

I ordered Eclipse strawberry plants from ION and am excited to see how they grow! I chose this variety for its potential to produce large, firm berries and its ability to keep flowering across a wide range of day lengths. The reported yields and shelf life were also big selling points for me. Looking forward to getting them established and enjoying my own fresh strawberries!
