Start At The Beginning
The fruit may be organic. The plant it came from may not be.
Most conversations about organic strawberries begin at the farm: what was sprayed, how weeds were managed, or what happened after the crop was planted. But the plant’s story begins months—and sometimes generations—earlier at the nursery.
A strawberry transplant does not arrive as a blank slate. It brings its crown, roots, stored energy, production history, and handling history into a new field or backyard. If that nursery stock was grown conventionally, the organic grower begins with a plant developed inside a different production system.
That gap is easy to miss because organic fruit and certified organic planting stock sound like the same promise. They are not. One describes the harvested crop. The other describes how the living plant was produced before it ever reached the grower.

How conventional strawberry plants are grown
Commercial nurseries have one job: produce millions of disease-free crowns as cheaply as possible. The conventional way to do that is to sterilize the soil before planting.

The idea sounded right, but belief alone was not enough. If organic strawberry planting stock was going to become a real option for growers, it had to perform outside a presentation and inside an actual production field.

Organic and conventional plants were evaluated side by side under comparable field conditions. The first question was basic but essential: would organically produced transplants survive handling, establish roots, and develop into commercially useful plants?
