Albion is a day-neutral strawberry developed by the University of California, Davis and released in 2004. It is one of the better-known day-neutral cultivars for gardeners and growers who want a long harvest season rather than a single concentrated crop. Because day-neutral plants are not dependent on shortening or lengthening day length to initiate flowering, Albion can continue producing flowers and fruit through much of the growing season when temperatures and growing conditions are favorable.
The berries are large, conical, firm and notably sweet when allowed to fully ripen on the plant. Albion is particularly valued for its combination of fruit quality, firmness and attractive appearance. The fruit is darker than Diamante both externally and internally, and the cultivar has been described as having excellent flavor and good suitability for both fresh eating and processing.
Albion also has a useful disease-resistance profile. It has strong resistance to Verticillium wilt and Phytophthora crown rot and is relatively resistant to anthracnose crown rot. UC research also notes tolerance to two-spotted spider mites under appropriate management.
For home gardens, Albion is a good choice when the goal is fresh strawberries over an extended season. It performs best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture. Day-neutral plants generally benefit from regular harvesting and runner removal because keeping unnecessary runners under control directs more of the plant’s energy toward flowers and fruit.
