Chandler is a classic short-day strawberry developed by the University of California, Davis and released in 1983. Unlike day-neutral varieties, Chandler responds to shortening day length to initiate flowering, making it a traditional June-bearing or short-day strawberry. Its production is therefore more concentrated than varieties such as Albion, Monterey or Seascape.

Chandler became well known for its combination of excellent flavor and attractive, medium-large fruit. It has historically been used for fresh-market production as well as home gardens and roadside sales. The fruit is generally medium to large, with a sweet flavor and good overall eating quality.

Because Chandler produces a concentrated crop, it can be an excellent choice for gardeners who want a substantial harvest for fresh eating, freezing, preserves or baking rather than strawberries arriving in smaller quantities throughout the entire season.

Chandler is best planted in a sunny, well-drained location with fertile soil and consistent moisture during flowering and fruit development. Good air circulation is particularly helpful because the dense flush of fruit during the main harvest can increase the importance of keeping foliage and berries as dry as practical.

UC IPM classifies Chandler as a short-day cultivar and lists it as susceptible to several major strawberry diseases, so good site preparation, healthy planting material and appropriate organic disease-management practices are important.
