Eclipse

Strawberries

Eclipse is a day-neutral, photoperiod-insensitive “summer plant” cultivar that fruits continuously through the growing season rather than in one flush, with strong performance in fall and winter harvests. It produces large, firm fruit with excellent shelf life and yields significantly higher than Portola, the variety it’s positioned to replace. Eclipse has strong resistance to Fusarium wilt, moderate resistance to Verticillium wilt and Phytophthora crown rot, and moderate susceptibility to charcoal rot.

Why growers keep coming back

UC Eclipse is a newer photoperiod-insensitive strawberry released by the University of California, Davis in 2023. It is often described as a “summer plant” cultivar because it was specifically developed for summer-plant production systems. Its flowering is not dependent on traditional short-day conditions, allowing it to continue flowering across a broad range of day lengths.

Eclipse is particularly notable for its combination of large fruit, firmness, long shelf life and high marketable yields. In UC Davis trials, cumulative marketable yields were substantially higher than Portola, UCD Finn and UCD Mojo, while the fruit maintained strong size and firmness through the production season.

Disease resistance is one of the major reasons Eclipse was developed. It carries resistance to Fusarium wilt race 1 and has moderate resistance to Verticillium wilt and Phytophthora crown rot. It is moderately susceptible to charcoal rot, so good drainage and careful site management remain important.

For gardeners, Eclipse is particularly interesting when large, firm berries and a long production window are more important than a single concentrated harvest. It can also be useful where Fusarium wilt is a concern.
